Despite a ban on air travel, caused by ash clouds from the volcanic eruption in Iceland coinciding with the opening days of Bauma 2010, the World’s largest construction exhibition was as impressive as ever. For the fi rst time, Combisafe had a stand in the outside area. A temporary, mobile UBIX® Roof was built over the entire 520m2 to house the largest stand Combisafe has ever had. Showcasing the complete range of Combisafe Systems on life-size modules, the stand allowed staff to demonstrate and visitors to test the products. This was supported throughout the day by demonstrations of the Combisafe Loading System/Alsipercha, Containment, Miller products and the Steel Mesh Barrier. Bauma was also the perfect opportunity for Combisafe to launch 6 new products – the Steel Mesh Barrier Stair, Multi Mesh Barrier, SCAFFSTEP™, new Filigree Attachment, Containment, and the UBIX Roof®. With 555,000m2 of exhibitor space and a total of 415,000 visitors from 200 countries, the positive atmosphere at the fair defi nitely displayed more confidence in the industry.

We would like to thank all of our customers who visited the stand at Bauma.

“The Shard” is London`s most innovative skyscraper under construction. Standing at 310m it will be the tallest building in Western Europe, almost twice the height of 30 St Mary Axe (The Gherkin). Adjacent to London’s busiest strategic transport hub at London Bridge, The Shard forms the first phase of the £2bn Renzo Piano, London Bridge Quarter regeneration project. The iconic landmark will include office space, a five star hotel and luxury apartments, all combined to form a ‘vertical city’. If the technical challenges of constructing Western Europe’s tallest building were not enough, the Shard’s construction team also has to develop safety solutions for a constrained site in a bustling part of London. 25 years experience of Working at Height helped Combisafe get selected as the company to help solve these issues. Since early last year Project Manager Mace Group and Steel Erector Severfield-Reeve Structures have worked closely with Combisafe to develop and provide bespoke systems to protect the workforce and the general public during the build.

■ The Combisafe Maxi Fan – this fall prevention tool was adapted to withstand 100 mph winds. Specifications never before requested.

■ The Combisafe Fast Frame – A quick to erect, bespoke edge protection system designed to satisfy the specific needs of the high-rise steel industry.

■ The Combisafe Loading System – Adapted for attachment to steel columns, this devices is for loading and unloading flat bed vehicles in a confi ned space.

Designed by London based architects Terry Farrell, Eagle House is being marked as a new landmark for the Shoreditch area and a catalyst for regeneration in this historic part of London. Key contractor Togher Construction chose the Alsipercha Fall-Arrest System as the safest way to install the formwork for the structure, while the Steel Mesh Barriers were seen as the most suitable proprietary edge protection system to protect the workers working at height in the building. Safety Nets Fans were chosen to protect the public and workers below from falling debris, on this 26-storey building.

UBIX® Roofing

The most eye-catching feature of the Bauma Exhibition was the UBIX Roof itself, comprising of a fixed outer roof, and an inner roof on tracks. Providing flexible, temporary weather protection, the inner roof of our stand could be easily extended and retracted by a single person, allowing sun or shade onto the stand.

Bridging the gap in Lyon

260 Steel Mesh Barriers can be seen today on the new A489/ A42 Lyon/ Geneve Motorway Bridge Interchange. The Steel Mesh Barriers being used on this bridge is an excellent example of Combisafe working with clients (in this case Eiffage TP) to deliver a tailor made solution for their Safety at Height needs. The Steel Mesh Barriers have been precast directly into the concrete slabs with anchor sockets, then lifted into position, ensuring immediate edge protection. In addition the features of the Steel Mesh Barriers ensure that the traffic passing below the bridge is protected from any falling debris during construction.

A step up in safety!

The SCAFFSTEP™ launched November 2008 is proving to be a huge success with our customers, with over 4000 sold to date. Lightweight and durable, the SCAFFSTEP is a personal step-up device, designed to enable a scaffolder to erect or dismantle guardrails on the lift above, whilst using the current lifts ledger as a guard rail. The SCAFFSTEP can be used at any position along the run of scaffold, as it does not rely on a standard for support. This means that it can be used at stop ends, returns, mid bay, and at changes in direction. The SCAFFSTEP can be used with traditional tube and fitting scaffolding, and also with all types of system scaffold.

Small attachment, huge benefits!

Limiting the need to work at height, the Filigree Attachment enables Steel Mesh Barriers or Guardrails to be preinstalled at ground level, benefi tting both precaster and contractor. Easily positioned during the concrete casting process, the Filigree Attachment is placed independently, and rotated on its three feet, to suit the position of the reinforced bar. Another benefit is that it will accept loading in any direction making positioning and placement fast and easy. Compliant to EN13374 Class A; the Filigree Attachment offers a cost effective, quick and safe method of producing a safe work at height environment for the workforce.
